Penetrating a sample with a defined number of ions. Reimar Spohr. United States Patent 4369370 (1983)

Single-tracks or counted multi-tracks can be obtained using (1) a beam aperture of defined size, (2) an ion detector counting the number of ions that have arrived or penetrated the sample, and (3) by a beam shutter closing the beam path after having detected a preset number of ions. Usually, the ion beam flux has to be reduced by several orders of magnitude to adapt the ion count rate to the limited shutter speed. In order to reduce the number of scattered ions, the beam-defining aperture should be as large as permissible.
