Coulter channels with varying cross section (in German). R. Spohr. German Patent DE 3626600 C2 (filed 6.8.1986, issued 11.05.1988)

According to this invention, channels with varying cross section, for example containing a constriction, can be fabricated. By modulating the channel cross section along the length of the channel, the orientation of shaped particles with respect to the channel axis can be defined. Two possibilities are discussed: (1) A conical channel which is entered from its wide side. It provides a gradual orientation of the suspended particle with respect to the cone axis before it ultimately squeezes through the exit aperture. (2) A "stepped" channel consisting of a wide channel section followed by a small channel section. It provides a gradual orientation of the suspended particle in the wide section followed by the analysis of its visco-elastic properties in the small section. Shaped channels can be applied for counting, sizing, and deformability measurements.
