We have irradiated pure iron at low temperature with highly energetic heavy ions. A change of behaviour in the damage production mechanism with increasing electronic stopping power (dE/dx)e has been demonstrated in a crystalline metallic target. At low (dE/dx)e (<40 keV/nm) the damage efficiency decreases whereas at higher (dE/dx)e it increases. This increased efficiency is interpreted as resulting from collective effects in the wake of the incident ion.
