A New Damage Mechanism in a Crystalline Metallic Target Irradiated with Heavy Gigaelectronvolt Ions. Dunlop, A., D. Lesueur, J. Morillo, J. Dural, R. Spohr, J. Vetter. C.R.Acad.Sci.Paris, vol. 309 II, p. 1277-1282, (1989)

We have irradiated pure iron at low temperature with highly energetic heavy ions. A change of behaviour in the damage production mechanism with increasing electronic stopping power (dE/dx)e has been demonstrated in a crystalline metallic target. At low (dE/dx)e (<40 keV/nm) the damage efficiency decreases whereas at higher (dE/dx)e it increases. This increased efficiency is interpreted as resulting from collective effects in the wake of the incident ion.
